Beyond my array of programming projects, I enjoy exploring additional hobbies that fuel my creativity and technical curiosity. From designing circuits to managing Linux servers for fun, my interests reflect my passion for solving problems and building meaningful tools.
With a basic understanding of electrical engineering, I have been able to design and build a variety of projects with extra features. This has added a layer of possibilities and complexity to my projects that I have enjoyed. I enjoy the need to think through the design and the problem-solving that comes with it.
As a DIYer and improviser, I often use materials and resources I already have. However, I have found that 3D printing has been a great tool for creating custom parts for my projects, especially as my ideas and projects increase in complexity over time. I often combine the use of existing resources with 3D printing to create unique solutions to problems.
A relatively new hobby for me, microcontroller programming, along with the myriad of sensors and components applicable to the projects I have in mind, has enabled me to level-up my DIY projects even further. I've found that the more my projects involve the physical world, the more I have to think deeply and triple-check my work to make sure I don't break any of the physical parts. I enjoy the challenge of working with hardware and software together, and the satisfaction of seeing a project come to life.
I have been a licensed Ham Radio operator since I was 13 years old. A very large portion of the ham radio community are tech-savvy and DIYers, and I have learned a lot from them. Drills and exercises have helped me prepare for emergencies, and practice working as part of a team under pressure.
I have set up and managed a variety of servers and networks at home, from small ad-hoc configurations, to multi-zoned networks with role separation and layer 3 security. This has allowed me to experiment with different configurations and technologies, and to learn how to keep systems running smoothly.
I have set up and managed several Windows and Linux servers over the years both physical servers at home, as well as virtual servers with cloud providers. This has allowed me to learn how to set up and manage a variety of services, including simple file sharing, hosting most of my own public DNS zones, hosting most of my web application projects, local audio streaming and distribution, and private cloud storage using resources like Nextcloud with encryption and cloud object storage.
I have done a variety of home improvement projects, from simple repairs and improvements, to complex renovations. This has allowed me to learn how to use a variety of tools and materials, and to improve my problem-solving skills. I enjoy the challenge of working with my hands, and the satisfaction of seeing a project come together.
I have set up and managed a variety of home automation systems, from simple smart lights to complex multi-platform integrations with Tasker and home-grown solutions. This has allowed me to learn how to automate tasks and improve efficiency, and to experiment with different technologies and platforms. Because current smart home devices and features lack standards, I've been able to hone my problem-solving skills and learn how to work around limitations.
Definitely one of those hobbies that is challenging to fit into a busy schedule, but I love the thrill of the ride and the challenge of the terrain. I enjoy the physical and mental challenge of mountain biking, and the sense of accomplishment that comes with conquering a difficult trail. I also enjoy the opportunity to explore new places.
